Airfare; we’ve been talking about it for a while now and are constantly looking at ways to make things cheaper for you guys to fly. Enter Hipmunk.com. Now, most of us know Reddit and the huge success it became and should expect great things from the simple Hipmunk search tool. This is fresh off the press, having gone live on the 17th of August, meaning it still has room to grow.
So what is different about this tool? Well, for starters, they allow you to make multiple searches in different tabs much like your web browser instead of a single search. They then sort out the available flights, removing any flight Hipmunk.com deems too crazy to fly. Us frequent flyer hounds might not agree with this, which is why we will probably stick to the ITA Matrix. But, this tool is pretty useful to make sure you have the cheapest available option at hand.
The site could use some programming so it completes the city name or airport code as you type it out, it isn’t that hard to do, but, being only 1 day old, we are sure more goodies will be popping up!

It might be tough to decipher at first. The default results are sorted by cheapest on top and most expensive on bottom and the length of the trip is visually placed on a horizontal line.

You can toggle the results with the features on the left hand side, but don’t miss the filter on the right. That allows you to remove a bunch of unwanted flights.

Of course, one of the great features we love about the ITA Matrix is allowing you to choose each leg, mixing and matching flights that other search engines don’t allow. Hipmunk included that, which is great! Once you find what you are looking for, you are taken to Orbitz to purchase your airfare there.
Orbitz is also responsible for the airfare listed, which means they suck the database from the ITA Matrix (you can never escape the matrix guys!)

In a nutshell, it is a good start to a new tool. Some cheap airfare didn’t show up when we tried to purchase and the return date kept on giving weird results, but it is definitely a handy tool for all travelers!
What are you waiting for? Start searching!
